Description

The accepted name Rhipsalis micrantha f. micrantha (Kunth) DC. was published in Prodr. 3: 476. 1828.

The geographic range is Ecuador; Peru found at elevations of 1000-1800 meters with an endangered status of least concern.

Rhipsalis micrantha f. micrantha is classified in the subgenus Phyllarthrorhipsalis.

Observed growing as an lithophyte or epiphyte. Overall habit is pendant or semi-erect, branches are dimorphic (more than one stem shape) and acrotonic (stems form from the tips of previous stems).

Stems are 2 to 4 angled, margins have shallow crenations (slightly scalloped), bristles are absent. Basal stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 20cm-25cm x 0.8cm-1cm. Main stems are determinate (seasonal growth is about the same length), 6.5cm-16cm x 0.8cm-1.5cm.

Flowers are rotate: sub-patent, patent or reflexed (wheel shaped: partial to wide open to reflexed), 0.7cm x 1.05cm. Petals from 5 to 7, sepals from 1 to 2. Inner petals are white, light-yellow, light-green or pink, outer petals are white, light-yellow, green or pink. Stamen are white, from 26 to 35. Stigma lobes 5. Flower ovary is globose or cylindrical, 0.4cm x 0.3cm.

Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is perpendicular. Does repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 3 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent at the areoles after flowering.

Unripe fruit is green or pink. Ripe fruit is globose or ovoid; white, yellow or red, 0.55cm-0.65cm x 0.5cm-1cm.

Other notable features:
Ripe fruit sometimes has a reddish ring at the top. While the flowers are predominantly white, I've observed almost entirely pale pink flowering specimen, at times they can even have a yellow-orange appearance.

Comments:
Forms are often recognized at the extreme morphological characterization found in nature, however this species presents a high level of plasticity and varying intermediate morphologies are reported between the various forms.
